The Girls Math Association is a club at Dublin High School dedicated to providing all girls who are interested in mathematics the opportunity to develop their skills through both competition resources and school support.
We believe that by encouraging more girls to expand their interests in math, we can improve the current gender ratio in high-tech industries. By creating a dedicated math environment, we will collaborate, develop, and improve together.
The Girls Math Association was founded by Grace Liu in the 2018-2019 school year with Mrs. Allison Malone as the advisor. The club aims to provide a supporting environment as well as resources and opportunities for girls interested in mathematics and STEM. Club meetings are generally held once a month in Ms. Mongold's room, J-209. Initially, meetings were held to providing helpful materials and discuss upcoming events and competitions. In January and February, we helped club members with AMC 10/12 registration and provided study materials.
Later in April, we opened team registrations for Purple Comet, a challenging math competition designed for middle to high school students that could be completed in teams of one to six students. The Girls Math Association competed in Purple Comet with two teams, Paπpiya and Countalopes, with a total of 6 competitors. In the 2019-2020 school year, additional to providing helpful materials for the AMC and study resources for SAT Math II Subject Test, we focused on interactive activities with the club members.
During club meetings, we hosted Kahoot games that consisted of review questions from the AMC 8 and 10 and offered rewards to encourage participation. In the second semester we planned to register for Purple Comet once again. However, due to the COVID-19 circumstances, the competition was moved online, but the Girls Math Association still participated with the team Paπpiya. In the following years, we hope to expand into more interactive activities, events, and tutoring opportunities.
