On August 9th, 2020, we had our official Awards Ceremony for the 2020 GMA Math Contest! In total, we had over 110 participants and 70+ attendees at the online ceremony. With our set of slides, we covered some basic information and announced the top winners. We were pleased to see that the scores were encouraging. Good job everyone! Hope to see you all next year!
We are hosting the 2020 GMA Math Contest, an online math competition for girls in grades 5-8, this August! Below is an abridged version of an article posted to local news outlets.
Although there are many harmful gender stereotypes and negative assumptions about math, the Girls Math Association hopes to clear these perceptions by supporting girls with their annual math contest. The 2020 GMA Math Contest encourages young girls in elementary and middle school to develop their problem solving and math skills so that when they reach high school, they feel comfortable in embracing mathematics and STEM as a possible career path. The contest will be held from August 1 to August 3 to give students time to prepare over the summer and the flexibility to choose when they will take the exam. Because of the COVID-19 crisis, the competition will be held online with a submission form. The exam is 50 minutes and contains 30 multiple choice intensive math problems covering algebra, geometry, number theory, counting, and probability. Top scorers of the exam in the Grades 5-6 Category and the 7-8 Category will be given monetary awards as prizes. To register for the contest, please complete this form. This summer, the officers of GMA are hard at work! We are currently working on planning more events for the 2020-2021 school year. Due to the pandemic, we are working on remote opportunities for our members. One of our new focus areas is outreach. Stay tuned for updates about our 2020 GMA Math Contest!
In the fall, members of the club will have the option to register for The Math Game (a competition formerly known as Who Wants to be a Mathematician?). We anticipate continuing registering teams for the Purple Comet Math Meet as well. Likewise, we will refer interested members to additional math competitions like the HMMT! We have recently received news that this contest will be online as well. The second year of our club began with a booth at the school club fair. This year, we recruited more students in lower grades. Since we were only able to host the Purple Comet Math Meet for two teams last year, our officers decided to focus more on interactive activities during club meetings. We created multiple Kahoot games with rewards for our club members based on competition questions from the AMC 8 and 10. Likewise, we offered information and study resources for the SAT Math II Subject Test. At the end of year, due to covid-19 health reasons, we moved the club Purple Comet Math Meet competition to online. Team Paπya competed again in the High School division. Look out for more updated information about next year's plans!
Our club was officially founded this school year! Throughout several months, we held meetings with updates on both the purpose of the club, future activities, and useful information on current opportunities. This included information on dates and registration for the AMC 10/12 at our school. In April, we decided to offer team registration and host the Purple Comet competition for any interested students. Two teams, Paπya and Countalopes, competed. Overall, it was a fulfilling year for a newly founded club.
